Why Bliss?

Bliss is the ultimate goal in Yoga.  The eighth limb in Raja Yoga, according to Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, is Samadhi which can be translated to mean 'spiritual bliss'.  While working the eight-limbed path (also referred to as ashtanga yoga), you move through a number of different experiences.  Each limb/experience helps you build up to the next.  Ultimately, yoga is a practice, and we practice many of the limbs in our daily lives, without even knowing it!

The eight limbs of yoga are meant to be practiced in a specific order, with each limb leading you to the next.  This starts with, Yama - ethical/moral standards to practice with the world, the next limb nicely accompanies the first, Niyama - observances to practice with yourself.  The most familiar of the limbs is the third, Asana - yoga poses that prepare you for stillness.  The fourth limb is Pranayama - the practice of controlling and slowing the breath (which helps to regulate the bodies energy).  The fifth limb is Pratyahara - withdrawing from the senses (we are moving our awareness away from disturbances outside of the mind).  The sixth limb is Dharana - the preparatory exercise for meditation, single pointed focus and concentration.  The seventh limb is Dhyana - the state of meditation where we are able to create silence and pay special attention to the stillness in our mind, even if the stillness only lasts for a moment, this is a practice where you continually work towards bringing the mind back to the silence and stillness.  Finally we reach the eighth limb, Samadhi - bliss, our transcendence into oneness, merging with divinity, this is not a limb that is sustainable unless you are in the process of leaving your body, it is known to be the end of the karmic/death/rebirth cycle, enlightened masters are known to transcend into Samadhi.
